It’s no longer a cute little December story. We’re in February, and Evansville has a winning record in Missouri Valley Conference men’s basketball play.
Two-fifths of the Purple Aces’ starting lineup is from Cedar Rapids. Senior forward Nate Garner of Washington High averages 9.9 points and 6 rebounds a game. Freshman Kaylon Williams of Kennedy High averages 6.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and a team-high 4.7 assists.
Entering this week, Evansville is 15-8 overall, 7-6 in the Valley. The Aces have six tough regular-season games left, capped by their Feb. 28 trip to league-leading Northern Iowa.
But this is already a success story. Evansville was 9-20 last year, and just 3-15 in the Valley.
Garner is getting a nice conclusion to his college career. And Williams is showing he was probably undervalued in the recruiting process.
